ABOUT MATRIX | MATRIX BASEL

MATRIX Basel has stood for distinctive accessories of exceptional Swiss quality since 1995. To this day, founder and textile designer Fabia Zindel is responsible for the design and production of all MATRIX collections. The MATRIX label shop opened at St. Johanns-Vorstadt 38 in Basel in 2010.

PERSON

Fabia Zindel growing up in Graubünden, Fabia Zindel moved to Basel in 1988, where she studied textile design at the School of Design Basel. After completing her studies, she founded her label MATRIX in 1995. Since then, she has been developing and producing all MATRIX products in her own screen-printing workshop. Fabia Zindel has received numerous awards for her work, including the Basel Culture Award in 2015, the Recognition Award of the City of Chur in 2012, the MAK Design Award Vienna in 2007, the Canton of Graubünden’s Cultural Promotion Award in 2005, and others.

PRODUCTS

The MATRIX product range encompasses fashion and home accessories. Each year, a themed scarf collection is created, alongside a variety of homeware products such as serving trays, glassware, towels, stationery, cushions and blankets. MATRIX regularly seeks to collaborate with local manufacturers in order to develop objects that complement the shop’s current product range and fit its thematic focus. Since 2005, MATRIX has been creating patterned façades, interiors, acoustic elements and wallpapers for selected architectural projects.

INSPIRATION

The MATRIX collections draw inspiration from the topicality of everyday life, art and science. The themes are diverse, ranging from «Rhine» 2021 to «Salt» 2022, «Wind» 2023, «Umami» 2024 and «Root» 2026. The patterns and colours of the MATRIX scarves are designed so that all the designs within a collection can be mixed and matched with one another. The colours reflect current trends whilst offering a palette ranging from subtle to vibrant.

ENVIRONMENT

MATRIX products are made following a strict environmental strategy. Only fabrics made from natural fibres such as silk, wool or linen are used, and water-soluble dyes are utilized for printing. MATRIX collections are manufactured as small series, entirely in Switzerland, with most stages of production taking place in the Basel workshop. The scarves are finished by hand in Appenzell, where their hems are meticulously hand-rolled. MATRIX emphasises the conscious use of resources, focusing on creating durable, high-quality products and precise craftsmanship.

IDENTITY

Fabia Zindel is personally responsible for every stage of the production of a MATRIX product, from the initial design and hand screen-printing through to final production. This ensures that the original concept of each product is consistently reflected in the finished object. MATRIX collections are produced in limited editions; each scarf is limited to a maximum of 20 pieces.

FUTURE

By staying true to its own values, MATRIX has established itself as a Swiss design label with international appeal. MATRIX products are presented in its own dedicated label shop and in selected stores, and are sold worldwide. They are high-quality products created for a discerning clientele with a strong appreciation for form, materials and durability.
