SCARVES WITH STORIES
Since 1995, MATRIX has designed and produced over forty scarf collections. Each collection is based on a specific theme. Following extensive image research, an experimental design process takes place, resulting in the development of several patterns. The final drafts are prepared as screen printing templates and the printing stencils are exposed. Once the colour combinations have been determined through test prints, production begins. The following chronicle provides a glimpse into the 30-year history of MATRIX scarves.PHI 2025/26
Since antiquity, the golden ratio has been used in the arts, in architecture, and in fashion. This principle of proportions describes a ratio that is perceived as particularly harmonious to the human eye.
This MATRIX Foulard Collectionis inspired by the golden ratio and other mathematical number sequences. As such, we have drawn inspiration from the fields of science, nature, and design history.

WIND 2023/24
Wind is the theme of this Matrix scarf collection. Our research took us from breezes to cyclones, from aviation pioneers to meteorological science. The designs «Bora», «Taifun», «Levante», «Ghibli», «Blizzard», «Mistral», and «Passat» tell the story of this journey.
SALT 2022/23
The Matrix scarf collection is dedicated to the theme of salt. Inspired by the history and significance of salt, we studied its chemical properties and dived into its micro- and macro-worlds. The seven designs «Uyuni», «Salicornia», «Halit», «Kala Namak», «Sigalit» and «Trapani» reflect this research.

RHINE 2021/22
This Scarf Collection pays homage to the Rhine. The designs «Fluss», «Boje», «Hafen», «Toma», «Waal» and «Wettstein», tell the story of our city’s river, the Rhine Harbor, the Wettstein Bridge, and buoys. With our patterns, we follow the Rhine from its source to its mouth at the sea. Guest designer Ahjin Kim contributed the design for the silk twill scarf named «Kormoran» – it illuminates the banks of the Rhine in the immediate surroundings of the Matrix Shop, capturing plants, architecture, and water, and giving plenty of space to two cormorants. A scarf full of stories.

FLORAL 2020/21
Over the past 25 years, Matrix’s signature geometric style has evolved across many collections. With the Floral collection, we have taken on a theme that has always held a special place in textile design. Our interpretation of the floral motif however extends far beyond the traditional floral theme – we highlight roots, grasses, and pine cones and elaborated the scarfs «Ginster», «Halm», «Föhre», «Klee» und «Thuja».
In addition, the talented illustrator and passionate screen printer Hanspeter Arni designed the wool scarf «Tree» for Matrix, which enriched our floral collection as a limited edition.

LOST IN SPACE 2019/20
When Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the moon in 1969, it was not just a small step for him, but above all a big step for mankind. Whereas we had previously looked out into space from Earth, it was now possible to view our planet from space. This shift in perspective not only captivated the worlds of technology and science, but also inspired artists and designers. The Space Age reached its peak. This era gives us inspiration for the scarfs «Galileo», «Kopernikus», «Sputnik», «Ariel», «Hal 9000», «Amdromeda» und «Gamma».

ANDALE MEXIKO 2018/19
We drew inspiration from the craftsmanship of the Aztecs, Zapotecs, and Mayans, and were captivated by the works of Frida Kahlo and Luis Barragán. The result is this vibrant collection featuring the scarves «Zocalo», «Tamayo», «Mitla», «Diego», «Catalina», «Arturo», «Ignacio», «Atoyac», and «Cardon». Basel-based tattoo artist Orlando Altermatt has designed a wool scarf for us; his «Frida» design is dedicated to the world-famous Mexican artist.

DEEP SEA 2017/18
The collection pays tribute to the diving pioneers Auguste Piccard, Jacques Cousteau, Eugenie Clark, and Lotte and Hans Hass. Alongside them, we have dived into the blue depths of the oceans and immersed ourselves in the wonders of the world beneath the waves. From this expedition into the deep sea arose the designs «Calypso», «Enzo», «Lotte», «Xarifa», «Roberto» and «Eugenie».
PLAYTIME 2016/17
Following Monsieur Hulot’s footsteps, we have wandered through the futuristic Paris of the late 1960s, experienced the pitfalls of modern technology and lost our way in a labyrinth of monotonous rooms. The scarfs «Jacques», «Bertille», «Francis», «Gérard» and «Louise» recount this entertaining odyssey.

CALDER 2016
Commissioned by the Fondation Beyeler and on the occasion of an exhibition on Alexander Calder’s work, MATRIX has designed the «Alex» scarf. The pattern is inspired by Calder’s Stabilés and jewellery pieces and is printed on organic cotton. This scarf is accompanied by two further scarves named «Marla» and «Fernand».VOYAGE AU CENTRE DE LA TERRE 2015/16
Inspired by Jules Verne’s novel «Le Voyage au Centre de la Terre», we embarked on an imaginary journey between the islands of Iceland and Sicily – deep within the Earth. We accompanied the novel’s hero, Otto Lindenbrock, and his nephew Axel on their adventurous expedition beneath the Earth’s surface.
This resulted in the designs «Sneffels», «Obsidian», «Callimitra», «Stromboli», «Silur» und «Prisma».
MATRIX 20 RELOADED 2015
To mark the label’s 20th anniversary, MATRIX organised an interdisciplinary art project. Figures from the fields of applied and fine art, architecture and music were invited to reinterpret one of ten selected objects from the MATRIX archive and to rework it across several stages and various disciplines.
MATRIX 20 RELOADED was launched in Basel in June 2015 and was exhibited at the Stadtgalerie in Chur in April 2016.

BLUE WINTER 2014/15
The 2014/15 winter collection takes us back to a time when craftsmanship was a living art. At the heart of the collection is a small cotton square, dyed in collaboration with the Joseph Koó blue printing workshop in Burgenland. This scarf, named «Indigo», references a time when the elaborate craft of indigo dyeing was still common and indigo-blue fabrics were used for the work and festive attire of the people of Burgenland. The designs «Rabnitz», «Apetlon», «Leitha» and «Sopron» are also part of the «Blue Winter» collection.

In 2005, we first pressed MATRIX fabrics into trays. These were silk fabrics with errors from our foulard production. Due to high demand, we have been specifically printing cotton fabrics for the production of MATRIX trays since 2006. The fabrics are created by hand in our screen-printing workshop before being moulded into their tray shape using a laminating process. To date, we created 17 extensive tray collections. MATRIX trays are available in five different formats.
